Photography at Tryall Club
Jamaica. What to expect.

By Michael Saab • Golden Light Photography Jamaica • Montego Bay

Tryall Club is one of the most private and expansive estate properties on Jamaica's north coast. Sitting on 2,200 acres in the parish of Hanover, roughly 30 minutes west of Montego Bay, it operates on a completely different scale to most resort properties. The estate has its own beach, a working coconut plantation, an 18-hole golf course, and over 70 private villa properties scattered across the hillside grounds. For photography, this scale and seclusion produces results that simply cannot be achieved at a more contained or commercial location.

This is what photography sessions at Tryall Club actually look like, what the estate offers, and how to arrange a session before you arrive.

The property

Why Tryall Club is one of the most
extraordinary photography locations in Jamaica.

Tryall is not a hotel in the conventional sense. It is a private villa club with a small number of great house rooms alongside a large collection of individually owned villa properties. Guests tend to arrive with more time and less of a resort schedule. That unhurried quality shows in the sessions. There is no sense of other guests or staff traffic nearby. The estate grounds feel genuinely private in a way that even the best hotel properties cannot fully replicate.

The landscape at Tryall is more varied than most north coast properties. The hillside villas look out over the sea across a wide, open bay. The beach at the base of the estate is quiet and largely uninterrupted. The coconut plantation, the great house grounds, and the river that runs through part of the estate all offer photographic settings with a character that is genuinely different from anything available at properties further east.

Tryall Club does not charge an outside vendor fee for guests who bring their own photographer. As a preferred vendor at the property, sessions are confirmed and arranged directly with the club.

"Tryall operates on a different scale to any other property I work at in Jamaica. The seclusion, the landscape, and the light here produce something entirely its own."

Locations within the estate

The best spots within Tryall Club
for photography sessions.

The beach

The Tryall beach is quiet, wide, and largely undisturbed. Because the estate is not a conventional resort with large numbers of hotel guests, the beach rarely has more than a handful of people on it at any time. At golden hour the light comes across the open bay from the west and the resulting quality on the sand and water is some of the most beautiful I photograph anywhere on Jamaica's north coast. For families in particular, this beach at late afternoon produces images with a warmth and spaciousness that is hard to find elsewhere.

The villa properties

The private villa properties at Tryall are among the most varied and photogenic in Jamaica. Each sits on its own plot on the hillside with ocean views, tropical gardens, and pool terraces. Sessions based at a specific villa can be entirely self-contained within the villa grounds, which suits families and groups who want something genuinely private. The variety between individual villas also means that sessions here have a visual quality that feels specific to the property rather than generic resort photography.

The great house and grounds

The great house at Tryall, a restored Georgian plantation great house, sits at the centre of the estate above the beach. The grounds around it, the stone steps, mature trees, and open lawns with sea views, offer a setting that has real historical weight and visual distinction. For family sessions that want something other than a beach backdrop, the great house grounds are exceptional.

The estate roads and plantation grounds

The working coconut plantation and the wider estate grounds at Tryall add a landscape quality to sessions that no other north coast property can offer. For families and groups who want photographs that show Jamaica as it actually is, not just the beach and the pool, the estate grounds here produce something genuinely different.

Who photographs here

Families, couples, and large groups
at Tryall Club Jamaica.

Tryall is particularly well suited to family photography, and especially to multigenerational groups and large family reunion gatherings. The scale of the estate means there is always space, and the private villa setting means a session for a large group does not feel crowded or rushed. I have photographed family reunions of 20 people and more at Tryall villa properties, and the estate grounds and beach provide the variety of settings needed to produce a complete, diverse gallery from a single session.

Couples and honeymoon sessions at Tryall have a quality that reflects the seclusion of the estate. There is no background noise from other guests, no sense of a resort schedule operating around you. Sessions here feel genuinely private and the photographs reflect that. The villa settings are particularly good for couples who want something more atmospheric and architectural than an open beach session.

Tryall is also one of the best proposal locations in Jamaica for clients who want complete privacy and discretion. The enclosed villa grounds, the quiet beach, and the great house gardens all offer positions where I can be completely out of sight. The seclusion of the estate means there is no risk of other guests stumbling into the moment.

Timing

Best time for photography
at Tryall Club.

Golden hour at Tryall is exceptional. The estate faces an open bay with an unobstructed western horizon, which means the last light before sunset hits the beach and the villa hillside with a warmth and direction that produces some of the most flattering photography available anywhere on the north coast. Sessions typically start between 4:30pm and 5:30pm depending on the time of year and the specific locations being used within the estate.

Morning sessions are available and produce a very different result. The beach at Tryall at 7am is one of the quietest and most serene settings I photograph in Jamaica. For families with very young children, or for clients who want the cooler, more reflective quality of early morning light, a sunrise session at Tryall is worth considering seriously.
