Photography at Round Hill
Hotel Jamaica. What to expect.
By Michael Saab • Golden Light Photography Jamaica • Montego Bay
Round Hill Hotel and Villas sits on a private headland west of Montego Bay and has a character that is entirely its own. Where Half Moon is expansive and dramatic, Round Hill is intimate, elevated, and refined. The property has been hosting guests since the 1950s and that history shows in its unhurried atmosphere. Photographically it is one of the most distinctive locations on the island, and consistently one of my favourite properties to work at.
This is what photography sessions at Round Hill actually look like, what the property offers, and how to arrange a session before you arrive.
The property
Why Round Hill is one of the most
distinctive photography locations in Jamaica.
Round Hill occupies a sheltered bay on a promontory just west of Montego Bay in the parish of Hanover. The estate covers around 110 acres, with the hotel rooms clustered near the beach and 27 private villas scattered across the hillside above. It is this hillside quality that gives Round Hill its particular character for photography. There is elevation, green landscape, and ocean views in almost every direction. The sense of seclusion here is genuine rather than manufactured.
The beach is smaller and more contained than Half Moon, which creates a more intimate feel. The water is calm and the setting is sheltered, which makes it particularly comfortable for sessions with young children. The stone paths, tropical planting, and architectural detail throughout the property give a session at Round Hill a depth and texture that open beach locations cannot match.
Round Hill does not charge an outside vendor fee for guests who bring their own photographer. As a preferred vendor at the property, sessions are straightforward to arrange directly with the hotel.
"Round Hill has a quality that is hard to define and easy to photograph. The combination of architecture, landscape, and light here produces images unlike anywhere else on the island."
Locations within the property
The best spots within Round Hill
for photography sessions.
The beach
The sheltered beach at Round Hill is smaller and calmer than the long resort beaches further east. The enclosed bay means the water is very still and the light at golden hour comes across it with a warmth that is genuinely extraordinary. For couples sessions, the intimacy of this beach, with no noise from the open sea and very few other guests in view, creates a feeling in the photographs that is completely different from a larger resort beach.
The villa hillside
The 27 private villas that sit on the hillside above the hotel are among the most photogenic settings I work in anywhere in Jamaica. Each villa has its own character, but the common thread is ocean views, tropical gardens, and the kind of unhurried private quality that is difficult to find on a resort beach. Sessions at the villa level produce a very different feel to beach sessions and work particularly well for couples and honeymoon photography where privacy and atmosphere matter most.
The stone paths and gardens
The winding stone paths, mature tropical planting, and architectural details throughout the Round Hill estate give a session here a texture and richness that is rare. These areas work especially well as connective tissue between the beach and villa sections of a session, and produce frames with a very different visual quality from anything shot on open sand.
The pool and terrace areas
The main pool and terrace areas at Round Hill offer elevated views across the bay and open sky above. At golden hour these settings produce some of the most dramatic light available on the property. For couples photography in particular, the combination of architectural structure and natural light here is consistently exceptional.
Who photographs here
Couples, families, honeymoons,
and proposals at Round Hill.
Round Hill attracts a particular kind of guest and the photography reflects that. Couples and honeymooners who want something intimate and elevated rather than sprawling. Families staying in the private villas who want sessions that feel genuinely personal rather than resort-standard. The property lends itself to couples photography and honeymoon sessions especially well, and the villa hillside setting makes for some of the most atmospheric family photography I produce anywhere in Jamaica.
Round Hill is also well suited to surprise proposal photography. The sheltered beach, the elevated villa terraces, and the stone garden paths all offer positions where I can place myself discreetly. The enclosed, private quality of the property means the moment can unfold without any of the background noise that comes with larger, busier resort properties.
Family sessions at Round Hill work particularly well for smaller families and couples with one or two children who want a session that feels relaxed and unhurried rather than managed. The contained scale of the property means there is less ground to cover and more time to settle into the session naturally.
Timing
Best time for photography
at Round Hill Hotel.
The golden hour window, the hour before sunset, is when Round Hill is at its most photogenic. The light comes across the sheltered bay from the west and fills the beach and lower grounds with a warm, low-angle glow that is remarkably flattering. Sessions typically start between 4:30pm and 5:30pm depending on the time of year. The villa hillside catches the last of the light slightly later than the beach, which means a session can move uphill as the evening progresses and remain in good light for longer.
Morning sessions are available and work well for families with young children. The beach at Round Hill is at its quietest in the early hours and the soft morning light is particularly beautiful on the still water of the sheltered bay. A 7am start produces a very different quality of image to a golden hour session and suits clients who prefer the cooler, more serene quality of early morning photography in Jamaica.
