Tensing Pen Negril Session

Families and couples at
Tensing Pen, Negril.

Tensing Pen sits on the cliffs of Negril with a character unlike any other property in Jamaica. The grounds are built into the rock itself. A wooden jetty crosses open water between two outcroppings. Rasta hammocks hang under a thatched palapa directly above the sea. The garden path runs through a tunnel of tropical green. Everything here is a photograph waiting to happen. Over the course of an afternoon I worked with several families and couples across the property, and each group found their own rhythm within it.

The garden path

Where every session at Tensing Pen begins.

The stone path that runs through the centre of the property is lined on both sides with bamboo, bougainvillea, and flowering tropical trees. It narrows and widens as it goes. The canopy filters the light and the paving stone underfoot gives the whole space a grounded, unhurried feel. It is one of those locations that settles people down quickly. Within a few minutes of walking it together, families stop performing and couples stop posing.

We started here with each group. The large extended family gathered along the path first, eight people in blues and whites against the green, and the results were immediate.

The garden path at Tensing Pen is one of the few locations in Negril where the light is soft and even at almost any time of day. The canopy does that work.

The clifftop terrace

Stone, sea, and an open sky.

The paved terrace at the cliff edge is the main gathering point at Tensing Pen. The flagstone underfoot is a pale, textured white. The volcanic rock drops away behind. The Caribbean opens out to the horizon in every direction. As a family photographer in Jamaica I return to this terrace again and again because it works for everyone. A group of eight looks as natural here as a couple on their own.

We brought the full extended family to the terrace as the light began to shift. Then we separated into smaller groups. Two older couples worked the same space quietly. A younger couple used it for something more playful. A father threw his daughter into the air above the sea and the sky did everything else.

The jetty

A narrow bridge between two pieces of rock, above open water.

There is no other location like this in Jamaica. The wooden jetty at Tensing Pen connects two limestone outcroppings above the Caribbean and the sea grape trees frame the view from the cliff above. When you stand on that jetty you are surrounded by water on all sides. The sky is behind you. The green is above you. It is a completely contained, cinematic frame that the camera finds almost on its own.

I photographed one couple here from the cliff above, from the adjacent rock, and from straight on through the sea grape canopy. Each angle produced something entirely different. A kiss on the jetty with the full horizon behind it is one of the images I think of when I think of what couples photography in Negril can be.

Standing on that jetty with the sea on every side, most couples forget the camera entirely. That is when the real photographs happen.

The rasta hammocks

Colour, laughter, and the ocean at your back.

Under a thatched palapa at the cliff edge there are wide rasta hammocks strung between timber posts. The colours are red, gold, and green against a pale blue sea. The cobbled stone below and the rustic thatching above give the whole setup a texture that is entirely unique to Tensing Pen. Two women settled into the hammock together and the session took on a life of its own from there. Within minutes the arms were raised, the heads were thrown back, and the laughter was completely unscripted.

Sunset on the rocks

The light that ends every session at Tensing Pen.

Negril faces due west. The sun drops directly into the Caribbean and when it does the light on the volcanic rock turns gold and the sky builds through layers of colour above the horizon. Tensing Pen is positioned right in the centre of that light. The clifftop and the rock formations catch it from every direction. A session that ends at this moment at this property always has a final run of images that are in a different category from everything that came before.

Two women perched on the volcanic rock as the sky turned. A couple in red and coral on the clifftop stone. A dip and a kiss as the last colour held. These are the frames that close an afternoon here.

What to know about Tensing Pen.

Tensing Pen is a boutique cliff property in Negril with a character that is completely its own. As a family photographer in Jamaica and a couples photographer in Jamaica with over twenty years working across the island, I have photographed at Tensing Pen many times and the variety it offers within a single session still surprises me. The jetty, the hammocks, the clifftop, the garden path, and the volcanic rock shoreline are all within walking distance of each other and each one produces a completely different kind of image.

If you are staying at Tensing Pen or planning a family photoshoot in Negril, get in touch and we can talk through what your session would look like. I also photograph families and couples at Half Moon, Round Hill, Tryall Club, Rockhouse, Rose Hall, and Pimento Hill House across Jamaica.
