The best beaches and locations
for a photoshoot in Jamaica.
By Michael Saab • Golden Light Photography Jamaica • Montego Bay
After more than 20 years photographing across Jamaica, the question I am asked most often before a session is simple: where should we go? The answer depends on a few things. Where you are staying. What kind of photographs you are after. And perhaps most importantly, what time of day the session is happening.
This is a practical guide to the best photography locations in Jamaica, what makes each one distinctive, and how to match the right location to your session.
Montego Bay
Montego Bay: the most photogenic
resort stretch in Jamaica.
Montego Bay is the most popular base for photography sessions in Jamaica, and for good reason. The north coast offers a consistent combination of calm turquoise water, white sand, warm late-afternoon light, and some of the most photogenic resort properties in the Caribbean.
Half Moon Resort
Half Moon is consistently one of the best photography locations in Jamaica. The estate stretches along a long crescent of private beach with calm, clear water and a natural frame of palms and tropical garden. The grounds include varied settings, open beach, shaded garden paths, and ocean-view villas, which means a single session can produce real variety without moving far. The late-afternoon light here is extraordinary. Half Moon does not charge an outside vendor fee, which makes it one of the most straightforward properties to arrange.
Round Hill Hotel and Villas
Round Hill has a more intimate, private feel than Half Moon. The property sits on a headland with a sheltered beach and sweeping views of the ocean. The villa grounds, stone paths, and tropical gardens create a setting that feels quieter and more personal, which suits couples and families who want something less expansive and more contained. The light in the late afternoon comes across the water from the west and produces some of the warmest tones on the north coast.
Tryall Club
Tryall Club sits slightly west of Montego Bay on a large private estate with a quiet beach, villa properties, and open hillside grounds. It is one of the more private settings on the north coast. Sessions here tend to feel very unhurried. The beach is never busy and the grounds offer a variety of natural settings beyond the shoreline. Tryall does not charge an outside vendor fee.
The S Hotel
The S Hotel on the Montego Bay strip offers a more contemporary, stylish setting for photography. The beach here is narrower and more intimate than the larger resort estates, which suits couples who want a closer, more cinematic feel. The property works particularly well for golden hour sessions where the light comes directly off the water.
All inclusive resorts in Montego Bay
Sandals Montego Bay, Secrets St. James, Iberostar Rose Hall, Riu Montego Bay, and Hilton Rose Hall can all work for photography sessions. Some charge an outside vendor fee for photographers, which varies by property and is worth clarifying in advance. The beach and grounds at these properties vary considerably in terms of photographic quality. I can advise on what to expect at your specific resort once you are in touch.
"The location shapes the entire feel of a session. A quiet stretch of private beach at golden hour produces something very different from a busy resort strip at midday."
Negril
Negril: the best location in Jamaica
for sunset photography.
Negril faces west, which means the sunset comes directly toward you across the water. At golden hour, the quality of light here is extraordinary. The glow that comes off the sea in the final 30 minutes before sunset is unlike anything on the north coast. If you are planning a sunset session in Jamaica and want the most dramatic natural light possible, Negril is the answer.
Seven Mile Beach
Seven Mile Beach is one of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the Caribbean at low tide. Wide, pale, and nearly flat, it creates a natural reflective surface that doubles the golden hour light and produces photographs with a luminous quality that is difficult to achieve anywhere else. The beach gets busy in the middle of the day but the southern end is significantly quieter, and in the early morning the entire stretch can feel almost empty.
The cliffs
The cliffside locations south of Seven Mile Beach are among the most dramatic photography settings on the island. Rocky outcrops, clear turquoise water below, and open sky. At sunset the light here is cinematic. Tensing Pen and the stretch of private cliffside properties in that area are particularly beautiful. For proposal photography, the cliffs at Negril at sunset are extraordinary.
Negril resorts
Sandals Negril, Couples Negril, Couples Tower Isle, and Beaches Negril all offer beach sessions for guests. The beach grounds at Sandals Negril and Couples Negril are particularly photogenic and the resort staff are generally accommodating of photographers at the right time of day.
Private villas
Private villa sessions across Jamaica.
For couples, families, and honeymooners staying at private villas, the villa itself is often the best location for a session. Gardens, pool terraces, ocean-view living spaces, and private beach access all create settings that are more personal and more intimate than a resort beach. There is no competition for space, no other guests in the background, and the session can move through the property at its own pace.
I work at villa properties island-wide including in the Montego Bay area, the hills above Negril, the Ocho Rios coast, Port Antonio, and Discovery Bay. Share your villa location and I will advise on what the property offers for photography.
Beyond the north coast
Ocho Rios, Port Antonio,
and island-wide sessions.
Ocho Rios has a different quality of scenery to the north coast, with lush hillside backdrops and a more dramatic, green landscape. Couples and families staying at Moon Palace Jamaica, Sandals Ochi, or private villa properties in the area can arrange sessions on location. The beaches here are smaller and more sheltered than Montego Bay, which creates a more contained and intimate setting.
Port Antonio on the east coast is one of the most dramatically beautiful parts of Jamaica. The scenery is more untouched and the landscape more varied. Sessions here require more travel time from Montego Bay but the results are worth it for clients who want something genuinely different. I am happy to travel island-wide for the right location.
How to choose
How to choose the right location
for your session in Jamaica.
In most cases, the best location is the one closest to where you are staying. Travelling across the island for a beach session sounds appealing but costs time and energy, and the difference between a well-chosen location nearby and one that requires an hour of driving is rarely worth it. Jamaica has extraordinary photography settings everywhere. The location near your accommodation, shot at the right time of day, will almost always produce better results than a distant location shot in poor light.
When you get in touch, share where you are staying and the dates you are available. I will recommend the right location and timing based on what I know about the light at each property and what will work best for your group.
