How much does a photographer
cost in Jamaica?
By Michael Saab • Golden Light Photography Jamaica • Montego Bay
The cost of a photographer in Jamaica varies more than most people expect. Resort-based packages, in-house photographers at hotel properties, and independent professional photographers all operate at very different price points and produce very different results. This guide explains what photography actually costs in Jamaica, what is included, and how to decide what is right for your trip.
The pricing
What photography costs in Jamaica
at Golden Light Photography.
US$500
First hour
Couples, families, proposals, engagements, and lifestyle sessions. Unlimited images. Full resolution gallery.
US$300
Each additional hour
Most clients invest US$500 to US$800 total for a complete session with variety and time to relax.
Every session includes unlimited delivered images with no cap on the number of photographs, full professional editing and retouching, a full-resolution private online gallery, and rights to print and share the images however you choose. There are no hidden charges for image delivery, file size, or printing rights.
Sessions start at one hour and most clients find that one to two hours covers everything they need. A one-hour session for a couple at golden hour typically produces 60 to 100 fully edited images. A two-hour family session will produce more, with greater variety of settings and groupings.
"There are no packages, no image caps, and no surprise charges at delivery. The hourly rate covers everything."
How long to book
One hour or two? How to decide
how long your session should run.
One hour is the right choice for most couples and individuals. It is enough time to walk through a location, settle into the session, and produce a full gallery of varied, natural images. The first 10 to 15 minutes of any session involve getting comfortable in front of the camera. A one-hour session leaves 45 minutes of genuinely relaxed photography after that initial settling period.
Two hours works well for families with young children who need more time and flexibility, for clients who want to move between two different locations or outfits, and for proposal sessions that include a full engagement shoot after the proposal itself.
If you are unsure, one hour is the better starting point. The session can be extended on the day if time and light allow.
Resort vs independent
Resort photography packages vs
an independent photographer in Jamaica.
Many resorts in Jamaica offer in-house photography packages. These are convenient and are usually included or discounted within a resort package price. They are also typically more limited in scope. In-house resort photographers often work under time pressure, use standard poses and locations within the property, and deliver a smaller number of images. The results are generally fine. They are rarely exceptional.
An independent photographer working outside the resort system has more flexibility in location, timing, and approach. Sessions are planned around the best light rather than around a resort schedule. The style is documentary and unhurried rather than templated. And the experience of working with someone who has photographed Jamaica for over 20 years means the location, timing, and creative decisions are all made with that depth of knowledge behind them.
The cost difference between a resort package and an independent photographer in Jamaica is often less than people expect. For clients at Half Moon, Round Hill, and Tryall Club in particular, there is no vendor fee for bringing your own photographer, which removes the main additional cost.
Vendor fees
Resort vendor fees for outside
photographers in Jamaica.
Some resorts in Jamaica charge an outside vendor fee when you bring your own photographer onto the property. This is an additional cost charged by the resort, not by the photographer, and it varies significantly between properties. Some resorts charge nothing. Others charge between US$150 and US$500 or more depending on the property and the type of session.
Half Moon Resort, Round Hill Hotel, and Tryall Club do not charge an outside vendor fee for guests who bring their own photographer. This is one reason these properties are recommended for photography sessions in Montego Bay. Sessions at Sandals, Secrets, Iberostar, and other all inclusive properties may involve an additional resort fee. I can advise on the current situation at your specific resort once you are in touch.
For sessions at locations outside any resort, including public beaches, private villas, and non-resort locations, there is no vendor fee of any kind.
