Golden Light Photography Jamaica

Booking a photographer
at a Jamaica resort.

What to expect when booking a photographer at a Jamaica resort. Day passes, how access works at all inclusive properties, what preferred vendor status means for your session, and how to arrange everything from abroad without any surprises on the day.

How it works

How resort photography
in Jamaica actually works.

Most people planning a photography session in Jamaica are staying at a resort and assume the process is completely straightforward. In most cases it is, but there is one thing worth knowing about before you book, particularly if you are staying at an all inclusive property.

All inclusive resorts in Jamaica operate on a closed model. The rate you pay as a guest covers everything inside the property, and that model means outside visitors generally need to purchase a day pass to enter. A photographer is no different. To access the resort grounds for your session, a day pass is typically required.

This is not complicated and it is not unusual. It is simply part of how all inclusive resorts work in Jamaica, and it is worth understanding before you start planning so the cost is factored in from the beginning. I will always tell you clearly whether a day pass applies at your property before you commit to anything.

"Share where you are staying and I will handle the rest. Access, timing, and location are all confirmed before you arrive."

Day passes

What is a day pass and
how much does it cost?

A day pass is a guest access fee that allows a non-resident to enter an all inclusive resort for the day. Most all inclusive properties in Jamaica offer them, and they are the standard way for a photographer to access the grounds for a session at one of these properties.

The cost varies by property, but as a general guide the day pass for a photographer at most Jamaica all inclusive resorts runs around US$150. This is an additional cost on top of the photography session fee and is worth budgeting for when you are planning. Some properties set their own rate, and I will confirm the exact figure for your property when you get in touch.

At properties where I hold preferred or recommended vendor status, the day pass process is handled smoothly and access is confirmed in advance. There are no surprises at the gate on the day of the session.

Preferred vendors

What preferred vendor status
means for your session.

Some Jamaica resorts maintain a list of preferred or recommended photographers who are approved to work on their property on an ongoing basis. At these properties, access is pre-established. The resort team knows the photographer, the process is familiar to both sides, and there is no day-of uncertainty about whether the photographer will be admitted.

For a session at one of these properties there is also a practical advantage beyond access: the photographer knows the grounds well. They know where the light falls at different times of year, which areas photograph best, and how to move efficiently between locations during the session. Twenty years of working at the same properties produces a familiarity that is genuinely useful on the day.

I hold preferred or recommended vendor status at Half Moon Resort, Round Hill Hotel and Villas, Tryall Club, Rose Hall, Rockhouse Hotel, Idle Awhile, and Pimento Hill House. Sessions at these properties are straightforward to arrange and the access process is handled entirely before you arrive.

Villas and private properties

What about villas and
private properties?

If you are staying at a private villa rather than an all inclusive resort, the access situation is much simpler. Private villas do not operate on the same closed model as all inclusive properties, and in almost all cases there is no day pass or access fee involved. Your photographer simply arrives at the villa as any other visitor would.

This is one of the reasons private villa sessions are popular, particularly for families and maternity clients who want space and privacy without the logistics that come with a large resort property. The session happens entirely on your terms, at your pace, in a setting that is completely your own for the duration of your stay.

If you are staying at a boutique hotel or smaller property rather than a large all inclusive, the access situation varies. Some smaller hotels welcome outside photographers with no fee at all. Others may ask for a simple notification. I will advise on what is required once I know your property.

Planning from abroad

How to arrange a photography session at a Jamaica resort from abroad.

Almost every client booking a photography session in Jamaica is planning from overseas, often months before their trip. The process is designed to work entirely remotely. You do not need to arrange anything before you arrive. Everything is confirmed before you land.

The steps are simple. Share your travel dates, the name of your resort or villa, what kind of session you are interested in, and how many people will be included. I confirm availability, advise on the best timing and location for your property, and let you know if a day pass applies and what it costs. A signed agreement and 50% retainer secure your date. The balance is due in cash on the day of your session.

By the time you arrive in Jamaica, almost everything is already in place. The location is chosen, the timing is set, and the session plan is agreed. On the day of the session, you purchase the day pass at the resort as you would any guest access, and the session begins from there. Most clients find the planning takes no more than a few email exchanges.

On the day

What a resort photography session
in Jamaica actually looks like.

Sessions are timed around the best light of the day, which at most Jamaica resorts means beginning roughly ninety minutes before sunset. On the day, I meet you at the front desk of your resort around 30 to 45 minutes before the session starts. The day pass is purchased there with you, as most properties require the photographer to present ID in person and cannot process it in advance. Once that is done we head straight to the first location and the session begins.
